Two birds on a wire
Sat happy as can be
Two birds on a wire
Soon became three
Then four, five and six joined in on the fun
Perched on high
They could see everyone
Six invited seven
Who then invited eight
Nine and ten followed
Oh, isn’t this great
Their voices united
In sweet-harmony
As they sang of the joy
In life, there could be
Fly freely
Fly far
Ride the winds
And perceive
Happiness lies within you
If you only believe!
Ahhh, the joy of friendship! I appreciate and value many things in life and I tend to surround myself with the people, places, and things to support my joy. But, it has been my relationship with a fantastic flock of friends that have sustained me in both good and bad times.
In 2014, I flew away from the nest of my familiar life to embark on a journey to the great unknown. I had no income, no potential of income, and very few things to my name. I was also managing difficulties with my health. I was fragile and frightened but I knew taking flight was suitable for my well-being.
As this slightly wounded bird took flight, she would meet up with her closest companions and lifelong friends to discuss flight plans and potential opportunities in the promising blue skies ahead. Our metaphoric venue? “The wire.” In this secure spot, we have always been free to be exactly who we are, state exactly how we feel, and encourage one another to live the exact kind of life we hope to live. The wire is, to us, our place for comfort, solace, reflection, companionship, and celebration.
Over the years our flock multiplied, happily so. We have welcomed one another...and one another’s other! Together, we’ve navigated marriage and divorce, loss and gain, the birth of children and grandchildren, and the death of a few of our beloved birds as well. We’ve known tragedy, and great triumph, we’ve picked up the pieces of our broken hearts and mended them. We have licked our wounds, celebrated our victories, and listened to countless stories about our jobs, kids, partners, new partners and hopes of new partners too.
We are birds of all varieties; strong and vulnerable, outspoken and soft-spoken, accomplished and still seeking, certain and uncertain, serious and funny, communicative and shy, grounded and flighty. We have lived blindly by the seat of our pants and painstakingly structured our moments throughout the day, all the while accepting our similarities and differences.
From time-to-time, we squabble, act catty, get our feelings hurt and even sulk, but in the end...we love one another! It is our love, sense of companionship, and encouragement of each other that has allowed us to fly freely, fly far, ride the winds and perceive; happiness lies within us if we only believe!
Like my treasured companions, do you find yourself meeting up in a secure spot (actual or virtual) with friends to discuss your feelings, thoughts, and events in your life? Do you find it freeing to share exactly who you are with them? Do you find the bonding experience to be beneficial to your overall health and wellness?
If so, I urge you to reach out to one of your flock, no matter how large or small. Get in touch with a family member or friend. Let them know your appreciation for them. Let your voices unite in sweet harmony and sing of the joy in life there can be!
