One Step At A Time

"For me, there is joy in taking things one step at a time." - Veronica V.

Veronica V. spent nearly twenty-five years overweight and overworked. Her one hundred additional pounds and fifty to sixty-hour workweeks were killing her, literally.

One day, Veronica stopped by the pharmacy, convenience store for a quick bite to eat. Her on-the-go meal consisted of Hostess cupcakes, an individual-sized bag of Doritos, and a small bottle of Sprite to hold her over until what promised to be another late dinner. This combination had become the go-to and too busy for a sit-down lunch staple. But, on this day, she felt guilty for resorting to the frequent unhealthy combo. She knew she would need to make better choices if she had any chance of living a healthier, happier, and more balanced life. She promised herself to do better the next day.

As Veronica reached the register, she noticed the look of concern on the face of the cashier. The elderly woman scanned each item and asked for $7.19. She then said, “this must be your lucky day. It’s 7/19, and so is your total.” They both giggled, smiled, and completed their transaction. As Veronica made her way towards the exit, the salesclerk stepped away from her post and asked if she might have a word with the rushed patron.

“Of course, but I only have a minute,” said Veronica.

“Well, that’s all it should take. My name is Theresa.” The two exchanged their names and pleasantries. “You tend to shop here on a fairly regular basis, right? Well, the past few visits, you have seemed a little more rushed than usual, and your face is often flush. I’ve been a little concerned about your health.” She continued, “we have a blood pressure device in the back of the store, would you consider checking it while you are here today?” Veronica was slightly embarrassed and a little annoyed, but she agreed to check her vitals.

The results came as a surprise, her blood pressure was significantly high. She took her blood pressure for a second time; it was even higher. This startling information prompted her to grab her cell phone and call her physician’s office right away. An appointment was made for 4:00 p.m. that same day. As she rushed off, Veronica thanked Theresa for her concern and suggestion.

Following the physician’s assessment and a series of tests, it was determined that Veronica had suffered a small stroke known as T.I.A. (Transient Ischemic Attack). She was also diagnosed with hypertension and pre-diabetes. Recommendations were made that included a new regimen of medications, a change in her diet, an introduction of light exercises, stress-reduction techniques, and changes to her workload.

Although Veronica had suspected that her health was in jeopardy, the reality was now staring her in the face. So, she set out to do what she could to improve both the quality and length of her life.

A meaningful, new life: First, Veronica exchanged her fifteen-year corporate attorney position for a remote legal consultant role. Next, she made subtle changes to her diet, followed by a complete overhaul. The final and pivotal piece, she began walking.

Taking one step at a time: Self-described, mild appreciator of the outdoors, Veronica began taking brief walks in a nearby metro parkway. The first few weeks were spent pushing herself to go, but eventually, she began looking forward to the daily walks. After all, the perfectly placed pebble lined pathway felt like a welcoming invitation to a peaceful, relaxing, and stress-free experience, enough so to be taking in the view. Over time, she increased her pace and moved on to the paved running paths for a slight jog.

Today: Veronica is the picture of health; she is no longer dependant upon blood pressure and diabetes medications. Not only has she shed over one hundred pounds, but she is running marathons, participating in triathlons, and plans to finish an Ironman competition in the future.

For Veronica, 7/19 was a lucky day, indeed. She believes it saved her life! She is healthier, happier, and rests in the knowledge that anything and everything is possible when she takes it, one step at a time.

How about you? Are you willing to place one foot in front of the other to have, do, be, or accomplish something new in your life? If so, congratulations! If not, I encourage you to do like Veronica and go for it! The results just might improve the length and quality of your life, too. I wish you joy!
